GRAND
AWARD WINNER -
1998 ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE AWARDS COMPETITION
Alabama Engineering
Firm Wins Recognition for Engineering Excellence! The Birmingham-based
geo-environmental engineering firm of Gallet & Associates, Inc.
has been selected as the Grand Award Winner for the 1998 Engineering
Excellence Awards Competition, Sponsored by the Consulting Engineers
Council of Alabama (CECA). The CECA Engineering Excellence Awards
Competition is an annual design competition that recognizes engineering
achievements which demonstrate the highest degree of merit and ingenuity.
For thirty-two years, consulting engineers across the State of Alabama
have entered their most innovative designs in the statewide competition.
Gallet & Associates, Inc. won the competition for its engineering
design and construction and materials testing of what is currently
the tallest modular retaining wall in Alabama.
The reinforced
soil segmental retaining wall was constructed for TV Alabama, Inc.
to accommodate a 700-foot-high TV transmission tower located off
I-20 East near Odenville, Alabama, on top of Bald Rock Mountain.
The 15,000-square-foot wall, which stands 33 feet high and 450 feet
long, is built into the southeast slope of the mountain. The site
selected for the tower is 1,000 feet above the elevation of Birmingham
Airport, which places the top of the tower at 1,700 feet above the
elevation of the airport. The complexity of the project created
a need for a module that provided the flexibility to allow tight
turns in high wall construction while maintaining the 7-to-10 degree
batter to the back preferred by designers. Mr. David Been,
a Professional Engineer and Manager of Engineering Services for
Gallet & Associates, Inc., served as the project manager for
the design of the wall. The Geo Stone Modular System was designed
by Mr. Fred Agee, owner and President of Islander Builders, Inc.,
in Birmingham. The wall module units were manufactured locally by
Grasselli Concrete Products, which is also located in Birmingham.

Construction of the wall
foundation began the first week of May 1997, and the entire wall
was completed by May 22, 1997, significantly ahead of schedule.
The wall construction was completed in 18 working days, with weather
and rock excavation presenting only minor delays. Also, this project
was completed without any accidents or injuries.
Gallet &
Associates, Inc., with offices in Birmingham, Alabama, and Atlanta,
Georgia, is nationally recognized for its work in the fields of
geotechnical and environmental consulting and materials testing.
Gallet & Associates, Inc. will move on to the national competition,
sponsored by the American Consulting Engineers Council in Washington,
D. C. The firm will be honored at the Engineering Excellence Awards
Ceremony and Engineers Week Luncheon, which is sponsored by the
Consulting Engineers Council of Alabama, on Tuesday, February 24,
1998, at the RSA Plaza Terrace, located in Montgomery.
